What Is Gray Thermo Rubber (TPR) and How Does It Differ from Standard Rubber?

Thermo Rubber, or TPR, is a thermoplastic elastomer — a polymer blend that behaves like rubber but is processed like plastic. Unlike vulcanized rubber, TPR doesn't require chemical curing, which makes it more consistent and easier to manufacture to tight tolerances. The result is a wheel that combines rubber's quiet, non-marking roll with improved resistance to oils, mild acids, and cleaning agents. Gray TPR is harder than standard black rubber, which reduces deformation under sustained load and extends service life in demanding environments.

What Size Gray TPR Caster Wheel Do I Need?

Wheel diameter affects rolling ease, floor clearance, and load capacity. As a general rule, larger wheels roll more easily over uneven surfaces and carry more weight. Use 2-1/2″ to 3″ wheels for light furniture, small carts, and display equipment under 200 lbs per caster. Choose 4″ to 5″ for general-purpose industrial and commercial carts in the 200–350 lb range. Select 6″ to 8″ for heavy equipment, utility carts, and anything exceeding 400 lbs per caster. Always check the rated capacity of the swivel head and frame, not just the wheel.

Are Gray TPR Casters Chemical Resistant?

TPR caster wheels resist mild chemicals including most water-based cleaning agents, diluted bleach solutions, and light oils. They are not recommended for continuous exposure to strong solvents, concentrated acids, or petroleum-based chemicals. For food-processing or chemical environments with heavy exposure, stainless steel or polyurethane wheels may be more appropriate. Always verify chemical compatibility with our engineering team before deploying in a wash-down or chemical handling application.

Can Gray TPR Casters Be Used Outdoors?

TPR is UV-stable and handles occasional outdoor exposure better than standard rubber, which can crack and oxidize with sun and ozone exposure. For light outdoor use on smooth concrete, TPR casters perform well. For rough terrain, wet surfaces, or extended outdoor use, our pneumatic or semi-pneumatic casters will provide better traction and shock absorption. Gray TPR is the right choice for covered loading docks, indoor-outdoor transitions, and sheltered outdoor storage areas.

What Mounting Styles Are Available for Gray TPR Casters?

Gray TPR casters are available with plate-mount swivel, plate-mount rigid, and stem-mount configurations. Plate swivels are the most common for carts and equipment. Stem options include round stem, threaded stem, and grip ring stem to fit pre-drilled equipment legs. Brake options include side-lock brakes, total-lock brakes, and directional locks. Our 6″ and 8″ TPR wheels are also available on heavy-duty swivel heads with larger ball bearing raceways for smoother rotation under higher loads.

Wheel Size Selection Guide
Light Load <200 lbs 2.5″ or 3″ Wheel | Medium 200–400 lbs 4″ or 5″ Wheel

Heavy loads over 400 lbs → select 6″ or 8″ TPR wheels. Larger diameter = easier rolling + higher capacity.

⚙ Engineer Tip

When replacing existing casters, measure the overall height of the current caster (floor to mounting plate), not just the wheel diameter. The swivel head adds 1″–2″ to the wheel diameter. A 5″ TPR wheel on a standard swivel head gives you about 6.5″ overall height. Matching this ensures your equipment sits level after the swap.

Gray TPR Caster FAQs

Is gray TPR the same as gray polyurethane?
No. Polyurethane (PU) is harder and more resistant to tearing but can be louder on rough surfaces. TPR is softer, quieter, and more flexible. TPR is better for sensitive floors and noise-critical environments; polyurethane is better for abrasive surfaces and high-speed applications.
Will gray TPR casters mark or stain floors?
No. The gray compound is non-marking and will not leave tire tracks or discoloration on any finished floor surface. This makes TPR casters popular in showrooms, restaurants, and healthcare settings.
How do I know if my floor can handle the load?
Calculate per-caster load by dividing total equipment weight by number of casters, then add 25% for safety margin. The larger TPR wheel diameter (6″–8″) distributes load over a larger contact patch, reducing PSI on the floor surface compared to smaller wheels at the same weight.
Are these casters suitable for high-temperature environments?
Standard gray TPR is rated for temperatures up to approximately 180°F. For ovens, autoclaves, or high-heat industrial environments above this threshold, our high-temperature phenolic or cast iron wheels are a better choice.
Can I get gray TPR casters with a brake?
Yes. Most sizes in our gray TPR line are available with side-lock or total-lock brakes. Total-lock brakes secure both the wheel and swivel — ideal for any caster that needs to stay fixed in position. Contact us if you need brake options not shown online.
