Plate Mount Casters

Choose the correct plate caster by matching the existing top plate footprint, then selecting a wheel material and duty rating optimized for your application. Below are the most common plate sizes used across carts, fixtures, fabrication equipment, racks, and OEM builds.

How to Choose the Correct Plate Size

  • Match the existing plate footprint first — overall size + bolt-hole spacing.
  • Check clearance for swivel radius, brakes, and overall height.
  • Select wheel material for noise, floor protection, and chemicals.
  • Load rating must exceed per-caster dynamic load with safety factor.

From Our Engineers: Plate Caster Selection Tips

Plate casters are the most versatile and secure mounting option we sell. After helping thousands of customers select the right plate caster, here are the mistakes we see most often:

  • Measure your existing bolt pattern first — The #1 reason for returns is wrong plate size. Measure the bolt hole spacing (not the outside plate dimensions). Our How to Measure Threaded Stem Casters shows you exactly how.
  • Plate size correlates to load capacity — Don’t try to fit a small plate on heavy equipment. A 2-3/8″×3-5/8″ plate tops out around 300 lbs per caster. For loads over 1,000 lbs, you need the 4″×4-1/2″ or larger.
  • Plate mount > stem mount for heavy loads — Four bolts distribute force across the mounting surface. Stem casters concentrate load at a single point. For anything over 500 lbs per caster, always go plate mount. See our Types of Stem Casters Guide.
  • Match swivel-to-rigid ratio to your use case — Standard 4-caster carts: 2 swivel + 2 rigid. If you need full omnidirectional movement (like in tight aisles), go all swivel but add brakes to at least 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common plate caster size?

4" × 4-1/2" is the universal industrial footprint used on thousands of carts, racks, and equipment bases.

How do I match my existing plate?

Measure plate width × length and measure the bolt-hole pattern. Match both to the correct subcategory above.

What wheel material should I choose?

Polyurethane for most industrial floors, rubber for quiet operation, phenolic for heavy static loads, nylon for wet areas.
