Off-Road Caster Comparison

Pick by terrain, payload, and whether you can tolerate flats. Pneumatic gives softest ride; foam-filled and thermo rubber are puncture-proof.

Diameter Type Capacity Surface Best For
4" Thermo Rubber (solid) 275 lb Gravel, grass, asphalt Garden and yard equipment
6" x 2" Thermo Rubber (solid) 275 lb Mixed indoor/outdoor Outdoor service carts
8" (solid) Thermo Rubber (solid) 275 lb Dock plates, gravel, mud No-flat outdoor service carts
8" x 3" Foam-Filled Poly 275 lb Gravel, dock plates Generators, welders, equipment carts
8" Pneumatic 4-ply Air 250 lb Grass, gravel, light off-road Outdoor utility carts
10" Pneumatic 4-ply Air 350 lb Heavy off-road, rough terrain Generator carts, equipment movers
10" Pneumatic w/ Brake 4-ply Air 350 lb Sloped surfaces Equipment requiring positive lock

How to Choose

1. Terrain Match

Smooth concrete or asphalt: any caster works — pick by capacity. Gravel, grass, dock plates: 8" or larger. Rough terrain, rocky, or roots: 10" pneumatic absorbs shock best.

2. Capacity

Total load divided by number of casters, then add 30-40% safety margin. Off-road casters typically run 250-650 lb capacity. For higher capacities, step up to industrial pneumatic 12-16".

3. Puncture-Free vs Air

Pneumatic gives the softest ride but carries flat risk in puncture-prone areas (construction yards, debris). Foam-filled poly and solid thermo rubber are heavier and ride slightly firmer but cannot go flat. For mission-critical outdoor service, choose flat-free.

4. Temperature Range

Most thermo rubber and foam-filled casters are rated −20°F to 160°F. Pneumatic rubber tires lose pressure in cold weather — check pressure monthly below 40°F.

Engineer Tip: For carts that sit outside in summer heat: foam-filled poly and solid thermo rubber hold up better than pneumatic. Air pressure in pneumatic tires fluctuates 1-2 PSI per 10°F temperature change — carts left in 95°F sun can over-pressurize and creep, then under-pressurize and roll sluggishly when it cools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "flat-free" mean?

Flat-free casters use solid material (thermo rubber) or closed-cell polyurethane foam instead of air. They cannot puncture, deflate, or go flat. The trade-off is slightly higher weight and a firmer ride than pneumatic.

Pneumatic vs foam-filled vs solid thermo rubber — which is best?

Pneumatic: softest ride, lowest cost, can puncture. Foam-filled poly: punctureless, holds shape, ~20% heavier than pneumatic. Solid thermo rubber: punctureless, longest service life, heaviest. Pick foam-filled for most outdoor industrial work — best balance of cost, weight, and durability.

Will off-road casters roll on smooth concrete?

Yes. The larger wheel diameter (8-10") rolls smoothly on concrete and asphalt. They are over-spec for indoor-only use, but they work fine. Indoor-only carts are better served by 4-6" polyurethane or thermo rubber for lower rolling resistance.

Can I use off-road casters in a freezer or cold storage?

Solid thermo rubber and foam-filled poly stay flexible to −20°F. Below that, choose a cold-rated polyurethane or specialty cold storage caster. Pneumatic rubber stiffens and loses traction below 0°F.

Do off-road casters work in mud and water?

Yes, with sealed bearings. Solid thermo rubber and foam-filled poly are not damaged by water. Standard ball bearings will rust over time — specify stainless or sealed precision bearings for wet environments.

What is the load capacity per caster?

Our flat-free off-road casters run 250-350 lb per caster. For four-wheel carts, that gives a 1,000-1,400 lb total cart capacity with safety margin. Heavier industrial off-road equipment uses 12-16" pneumatic, which we stock under a separate collection.

Do you carry casters for generators and pressure washers?

Yes — our 8" and 10" pneumatic and foam-filled casters are commonly used on Generac, Honda, and Powermate generator cart kits. Standard 4" x 4-1/2" or 4" x 4" plate fits most OEM frames.

How long do off-road pneumatic tires last?

Pneumatic life depends on storage and load. Stored indoors, properly inflated, on a properly sized cart: 3-5 years. Outdoor storage in UV sunlight: 1-3 years — UV ages rubber. Foam-filled and thermo rubber last longer in UV but are still subject to rubber compound aging.
